R06 Toolkit

R06 Financial planning practice

This is the final unit needed to achieve the CII Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning. It brings together all the knowledge gained throughout the previous five units. Candidates cannot achieve their level 4 qualification or apply for their Statement of Professional Standing (SPS) without a pass in the R06 exam to complete their Diploma.

The R06 exam is a three-hour written exam based on case studies released two and a half weeks prior to the exam sitting. Worth 30 credits and with a recommended 100 hours of study, this is a chunky unit that needs serious attention. The R06 exam can be sat four times a year (January / April / July and October usually), so if a candidate fails, they have to wait a while until the next sitting.

The BTS approach to passing R06

BTS STEP Approach to Learning

The BTS resources provide a structured study path through the R06 syllabus, covering both the technical knowledge and exam technique required to achieve a pass.

We follow a simple model based on our proven STEP approach to planning your study: Study | Train | e-Learn | Practise

Below you will find an overview of the study support options that make up the BTS approach with details of how the BTS materials can be used to support your learning.

You don’t need to use every element of the BTS approach, but we recommend starting by working through the BTS study guide before attending a workshop in the lead up to your exam sitting. Workshop attendees receive access to the e-Learning Case Study Analysis module as part of their booking fee but it is possible to purchase the Case Study Analysis standalone if you can’t attend a workshop.

How is the BTS R06 study guide different?

Our study guides have been designed with learners in mind. We bring the subject matter to life by building up the key knowledge areas with you, using charts and visuals to paint pictures, making the syllabus as interesting as possible.

This guide will get you started on the right exam track in terms of your question answering techniques.

It will introduce you to key techniques and mnemonics to help answer the questions in a way the CII R06 examiner will love. It is full of practice case studies that enable you to learn and then practise these techniques on.

Study

The key to exam success is not just reading and learning technical information parrot fashion.

Think of your BTS study guide as the first step on your very own revision track. You’ll be able to check your progress throughout, using activities, practice questions and end of chapter tests.

As you work through each chapter, you will gradually cover the full R06 syllabus and practise the required exam techniques through the use of:

  • activities that test and embed learning of the key technical knowledge tested in R06
  • practice case study based questions with explained answers
  • end of chapter summaries highlighting key learning points
  • a full specimen exam with explained answers

Our R06 study plan has been designed to encourage and support your planning as you work through the R06 unit.

BTS study plans show you how to:

  • break your unit of study down into manageable chunks
  • consider how much time to put into each learning outcome, based on their weightings
  • think about what additional resources you might need to support your learning

Attending a remote workshop can help consolidate the key knowledge required for an exam pass.

What is the BTS R06 workshop like?

The workshop concentrates on the key technical knowledge and exam techniques that are essential for an R06 exam pass.

The workshop is scheduled for the week following the release of the R06 exam case studies. BTS will have analysed the case studies prior to the workshop, and the workshop days will involve working through model questions and answers to practice key R06 exam techniques and technical knowledge. You will have the opportunity to ask and discuss questions in a group forum as well, to prepare for the R06 exam sitting as much as possible.

R06 workshop dates are available for each sitting of the exam. If you can’t see a date that works for you, get in touch to ask about more options.

Train

The workshop is ideal preparation in the lead up to your R06 exam sitting.

What makes the R06 workshop so useful?

A workshop is a live online event where you can benefit not just from the BTS trainer but also from working alongside others studying for the same exam. Discussions within the group can help to reassure you and improve your understanding of key exam areas. You’ll get out of your day as much as you put in (and more!).

Included in the fee is access to the R06 case study analysis module, so you do not need to purchase this separately. Access to the R06 case study analysis for the previous exam sitting (for past paper practise) will be provided when your booking has been confirmed. The BTS analysis for your sitting will then be automatically added to your account within four days of the release of the case studies.

You’ll also be able to continue your conversations with your fellow R06 candidates in our student-led forums. Login to your BTS account and head over to the Careers Zone to access our forums.
