R04 workshops are split across two days. We recommend you book onto both but, if you prefer, you can just attend the day that covers the areas you need.
A BTS trainer will guide you through a focused, interactive day with other learners, helping you build exam technique, question-answering skills and confidence with the CII’s wording. R04 workshop dates are added throughout the year. If you can’t see a suitable date, get in touch to ask about other options.
Day 1: Covering LO2: HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) tax and pension planning and LO4: Defined Benefit (DB) schemesLO2: Understand how the HMRC tax regime applies to pensions planning and including tax relief available to individuals on pension contributions as well as understanding of key limits and controls such as the annual allowance, lifetime allowance, and tapering rules. We also introduce transitional protections and the tax treatment of alternative pension schemes.
LO4: Understand the structure, characteristics and application of Defined Benefit (DB) schemes to an individual’s pension planning. There’s lots to learn on this topic and areas include how DB schemes operate and the rules governing them, the role of trustees and scheme governance responsibilities. As well as implications on leaving a scheme, early retirement, normal retirement, and transfer considerations. The various types of ill-health and death benefits within DB arrangements and finally public sector DB schemes.
Day 2: Covering LO6: Drawing pension benefits and LO7: State PensionsLO6: This is the second most heavily weighted R04 learning outcome, and here we will look at various pension freedoms related to DC schemes including drawdown, annuities, and lump sums. For DB pensions we examine how benefits can be taken, such as scheme pensions and look at rules on small pots and trivial commutation. As well as options for accessing State Pension benefits.
LO7: Here we specifically focus on how State Pension Schemes integrate with private pension planning. Including the Pension Credit system and its relevance to lower-income retirees and touch on other state death benefits designed to support dependants. The workshop is ideal either for some last minute exam revision, or if you are at the start of your studies and perhaps struggling a bit with all those pension rules!
A workshop is a live event where you can benefit not just from the BTS trainer but also from working alongside others studying for the same exam.
Discussions within the group can help to reassure you and improve your understanding of key exam areas.
You’ll get out of your day as much as you put in (and more!).
After the workshop you will have 180-days access to a set of digital revision materials which include:
slides from the workshop, practice tests, technical revision sheets and a specimen exam with explained answers, so you continue your learning after the event.
You’ll also be able to continue your conversations with your fellow R04 candidates in our student-led forums.
Delivered on Teams. Places are limited.
Each day will commence at 09:30 sharp and finish by 16:30, with breaks timetabled for lunch etc throughout the day.
Please be advised that these sessions may be recorded for internal training and quality purposes only. Recordings won’t be shared with attendees after the workshop, so live attendance is required.
Cancellation Policy:
The viability of a workshop is based on minimum delegate numbers.
If you need to cancel your space, please let us know in writing as soon as possible and no later than two weeks prior to the start date.
Cancellations after this point will not be refunded unless a replacement delegate can be found, as this would impact on the course for your fellow delegates.
If BTS cancels the workshop, the cost of attending the workshop will be refunded in full.
